Bates Trail Cairn Reflection

Unique to Acadia National Park, Bates cairns first started appearing in the 1950s as a way to mark trails on the bald peaks. They’re named after Waldron Bates who developed this particular style of trail marker and authored the first hiking trail maps for the park. Often made using pink granite, these trail markers have a way of reflecting the past while also pointing towards what lies ahead.
